- Stay safe. Before providing first aid, make sure the scene is safe for you and the person needing assistance. If necessary, call 911 or your local emergency number for help.
- Check the person’s airway, breathing, and pulse. If the person is unconscious, check to see if they are breathing and have a pulse. If they are not breathing, start CPR immediately. If they are breathing but have no pulse, begin chest compressions.
- Stop bleeding. If the person is bleeding, apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or gauze. If the bleeding does not stop after several minutes, seek medical attention.
- Treat for shock. If the person is in shock (pale, sweaty, and weak), lay them down with their feet elevated and cover them with a blanket to keep them warm.
- Treat for burns. If the person has a burn, cool the burn by running cool water over it for at least five minutes. Cover the burn with a clean, dry cloth or bandage.
- Treat for cuts and scrapes. If the person has a cut or scrape, clean the wound with soap and water and apply a bandage.
Remember, these are just basic first aid tips. If you are in a serious situation, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
